A Quiet Place Review
A Quiet Place Review
A Quiet Place falls under the genre of thriller/horror, the
film follows a family living in a post-apocalyptic wasteland terrorised by giant
reptile like predators with extraordinary hearing, but they are blind meaning
if you are silent you are safe. The family live in constant fear as one tiny
noise could mean their death, to make matters worse the mother is due to give
birth to her baby any day. The only reason the Abbot family has survived this
long is due to Reagan the daughter being deaf meaning the whole family
communicates through sign language.
The movie never addresses how their world became and like
this and if they are the only place affected by these predators. I think if
more of a background story was given it could have given more depth to the
story line and the characters. Although in an interview Krasinski stated that
he developed the idea of the monster by watching mostly alien movies, but he didn’t
want it to look like it was an actual thinking alien he wanted it to be like a
predator or a parasite. Emily Blunt and John Krasinski who play the two main
characters fit the roles perfectly, one of the best scenes throughout the whole
movie is when Evelynn goes into labour alone and has to be silent as the monster
is lurking about their house, she is walking around the basement too find a
place to stay and has a nail go through her foot, it is a very hard scene to
watch due do its shock factor but it shows how well blunt plays the role.
As the majority of the movie is silent it creates a very
tense atmosphere as you are almost always waiting for something to happen, also
the eerie silence makes the jump scares much louder and more terrifying. The climax
of the film comes when Regan realises that the key to killing the monsters is
her hearing aid. This adds to the sadness of the ending as you realise that the
did not need to die as they had what could kill them all along. Overall, I do
think that it was a very good film and I highly recommend watching it in
cinemas as it gives the full affect of the silent movie and from a budget of $17,000,000
it has done extremely well and accumulated $332,583,447 worldwide.
